If you've come across EMDR and you're not quite sure what it is or it sounds a bit unusual - you are not alone.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a type of therapy designed to help your brain process experiences that feel stuck, overwhelming, or difficult to make sense of.
When something distressing happens, your brain will usually process it naturally over time.
But, sometimes, especially with trauma or repeated stress, that experience doesn't get fully processed. It can stay 'active' in the nervous system showing up as:
EMDR helps your brain return to that experience in a safe, supported way so it can be processed differently.
In EMDR we gently bring attention to a memory, feeling or belief that feels stuck.
At the same time, we use something called bilateral stimulation - often eye movements from side to side or tapping alternate arms to support your brain in processing it.
You don't need to anaylse everything or explain it in detail.
Instead, the process allows your brain to do what it naturally knows how to do - just with a bit of guidance and support.
One of the most common worries people have is:
"Will I have to relive everything?"
The answer is no.
For many people, EMDR feels less like "talking through everything" and more like things beginning to shift internally.
Memories can feel less intense.
Thoughts can feel less overwhelming.
And patterns that once felt fixed can begin to loosen.
EMDR is often used for:
EMDR can be particularly helpful if:
It's a collaborative process, and we would always take time to understand whether it would be right for you.
If you're curious about EMDR and whether it might be helpful you are welcome to get in touch.
We can talk through what you are experiencing and think together about the best way forward.
